Building Team Kids Visit Ronald McDonald House
On May 2nd and 3rd,
Washington Street School's Building Team Kids, accompanied by faculty advisors
Janet Goldstein, Christine Hanratty and Kate Hayden, visited the Ronald
McDonald House in New Hyde Park. Families who have a child admitted to the
nearby Cohen’s Children’s Hospital are able to stay at this facility during
their child’s hospital stay. Our
students were treated to a tour of this incredible lodging and then had the
opportunity to utilize the cooking stations in the kitchen to prepare brownies,
cupcakes and other desserts for the families staying at the facility. The
students and teachers enjoyed preparing the desserts for others. A special
added bonus was seeing the smiles on faces of families returning from the
hospital when they discovered the treats waiting for them. The students can’t
wait to return to create more culinary treats for these families! Thank you to
our Building Team Kids for showing, once again, that at Washington Street it's
always Cool to Care!

St. Baldrick's Event 2012
The Franklin Square Community came together on Saturday, March 31st, at Washington Street School, to fight pediatric cancers. Over 150 district students, teachers and parents shaved their heads to raise money for The St. Baldrick's Foundation to support them in their fight against cancers in children. Hundreds more volunteered and/or attended the event. The day demonstrated what a wonderful, caring community we live in. More than $50,000 has been raised so far. Enjoy the video that highlights this special day.

Super Bowl Friday at WSS
Super Bowl Friday was buzzing with activity at Washington Street School, as our annual "Souper Bowl" Recesses were held. In addition to students and staff, even our Superintendent, Mr. Manley, demonstrated his athletic skill with some incredible field goal kicks. In addition to the fun, more than 500 cans of soup were donated to Long Island Cares: The Harry Chapin Food Bank. Thank you to all who donated and to Mr. Stella, Miss Read, Mr. Boyle and Mr. Chhan for organizing the event.
Also on Friday, we got to wish our wonderful assistant principal, Mr. Stella, a very happy birthday!
As always at Washington Street School, caring and smiles are a winning combination!
